What is Couples Therapy?
Couples therapy is a specialized type of psychotherapy designed to help couples improve their relationship dynamics. The “client” in couples therapy is the relationship dynamic, but the individual wellbeing of each person is equally important to the overall functioning of the relationship. Couples therapy can help partners gain insight and understanding into their relationship issues or presenting concerns and learn the skills to be able to overcome or work through barriers to their relationship success. The overall goal in couples therapy is for each individual to be able to report an improvement in their relationship satisfaction. However, clients will also bring in their own goals for the relationship to work on in the process!
At Confluent Relationship Therapy, Sara provides an environment for all partners to be seen, heard, and better understood by each other, fostering a unique space where empathy and compassion can flourish. Being able to emotionally express yourself in a safe setting is fundamental to getting needs met in the relationship, as it allows both partners to openly share their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or misunderstanding. This open communication not only enhances emotional intimacy but also plays a crucial role in resolving conflicts effectively. It also lays the foundation to build or rebuild trust, love, and support of one another, paving the way for a more resilient partnership.

Research shows that the longer a couple waits to seek therapy for their issues, the more challenging the process will be to change the dysfunctional dynamics of the relationship. Among busy life schedules and commitments, there may never be a “good” time to start therapy, so why delay the process? Don’t wait until your relationship is on the brink of separation before seeking help!

“Connecting is not magic. Like any other skill, it can be learned, practiced, and mastered.”

Benefits of Couples Therapy
Learn more about your relationship. Through assessment and information gathering, you’ll be able to learn more about your relationship dynamics for the good, the not-so-good, and everything in-between.
Have a professional sounding board. A couple’s therapist can provide honest and impartial feedback so that you both can grow! Having insight is the first step to making a change.
Express yourself to your partner in a safe space. Therapy is a safe space where both partners can express their thoughts and feelings through an open dialogue without judgement or interruption.
Deepen your connection with your partner. By engaging in meaningful conversations and shared experiences, you can foster intimacy and understanding. This goes hand-in-hand with increasing a level of trust and commitment to the relationship, if both partners actively invest time and effort into nurturing their bond.
Increase empathy and understanding of each other. Learn how to cultivate respect and be able to fully hear each other’s perspectives, creating a culture of compassion and support.
